MANILA, Philippines — Around 78 percent of policemen facing administrative charges are patrolmen, the chief of the Philippine National Police Internal Affairs Service (PNP-IAS) said over the weekend.

According to IAS inspector general Alfegar Triambulo, most of the administrative cases they are handling involved patrolmen, formerly known as Police Officers 1.

These include those arrested for extortion and drug abuse.

“All types of criminal and adminitrative cases, particularly those involving illegal drugs are PO1. At least 78 percent of the policemen facing charges are PO1,” he said.

Of the 190,000 police officers and personnel in the country, 47,383 are patrolmen while 11,025 are patrolwomen, PNP spokesman Brig. Gen.Bernard Banac said.

The IAS is also handling cases involving police officers accused of domestic violence.

“Most of them are accused of physical abuse or abandoning their spouses,” Triambulo said.

Records showed 375 police officers have been dismissed after testing positive of drug use since July 2016.

Meanwhile, a total of 95 police scalawags arrested by the PNP Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group were penalized. Of the number, 76 were dismissed while 12 were suspended and seven got demoted.
