MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) warned motorists there would no longer be a “window period” for its traffic number coding scheme on major thoroughfares and alternate routes in Metro Manila.

In an interview yesterday, MMDA traffic chief Bong Nebrija said motorists whose vehicles are under “coding” will be fined P1,000 for violating the number scheme if spotted in prohibited areas from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“Vehicles that are ‘coding’ are not allowed from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. We are just reiterating because the number scheme of LGUs varies,” Nebrija said.

The MMDA is trying to harmonize the implementation of the number coding scheme along with the existing coding schemes in all cities in the metropolis, according to Nebrija.

He admitted, though, that it would take some time, as it requires a revision and review of existing ordinances in different cities and one municipality in Metro Manila.

“It cannot be changed immediately because we will need the approval of the city councils of concerned cities,” he said.

MMDA general manager Jojo Garcia said the “no window hours” directive was reiterated during a meeting with Metro Manila mayors following erroneous rules on number coding schemes.

In another development, Metro Manila mayors have deputized the MMDA traffic enforcers to implement their traffic management code or ordinances related to jaywalking.

Under the policy, Nebrija said the MMDA would now be able to apprehend commuters violating jaywalking-related ordinances in all cities and one municipality in Metro Manila.

He added that the MMDA would also use the same ticket issued by the LGUs to erring motorists and that their enforcers would undergo training as part of the deputation of the agency.
