OFW jumps off building in Dubai to escape agency
MANILA, Philippines — A 27-year-old Filipina jumped off a building in Dubai to escape after being held against her will by her employment agency.
The Filipina obtained a spinal fracture after jumping off the third floor of a building, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs.
The DFA has cautioned Filipinos to be wary of accepting job offers from social media, as with the case of the Filipina in Dubai.
The victim accepted a job offer through social media and arrived in the United Arab Emirates in December using a tourist visa.
"Upon arrival, she was brought to her agency’s accommodation where she was locked up and not given food. She decided to escape a few days ago by jumping from the third floor of the building," DFA spokesperson Elmer Cato said.
The Philippine Consulate General in Dubai is now making arrangements for the injured worker's return to the country.
"The Consulate General is continuously working with relevant agencies in the UAE to prevent similar occurrences in the future," the DFA said. — Patricia Lourdes Viray
