Duterte declares May 14 special non-working holiday

There is no more time to postpone the barangay elections, the chairman of the House committee on suffrage and electoral reforms said yesterday.

MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte has declared May 14, Monday, a special non-working holiday nationwide for the synchronized barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections.

“Now, therefore, I, Rodrigo Duterte, President of the Philippines by virtue of the powers vested in me by law do hereby declare Monday, 14 May 2018, as a special non-working day throughout the country,” the proclamation no. 479 read.

Duterte made the declaration to “enable people to fully exercise their right of suffrage.”

Proclamation No. 479 was released to the media on Wednesday. 

It was signed by Duterte and Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea.
