MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Depression Maring dumped heavy rains flooding areas in Metro Manila and prompting landslides and flashfloods in nearby towns.
Scenes of people wading in waist-deep flood, taking refuge on top of cranes and riding boats were seen as PAGASA issued a red rainfall warning over Metro Manila, Bulacan, Pampanga, Bataan and Rizal.

A red rainfall warning means the downpour constitutes an emergency with observed rainfall reaching more than 30 mm within one hour or more than 65 mm for three hours.
Two brothers, aged 14 and 17, died when a landslide covered their home at the foot of a hill before dawn in Taytay, Rizal.
Meanwhile, five other people remain missing after flashfloods swept away a house beside a swollen San Cristobal River in Calamba, Laguna. Eight others including five children were rescued.

Twenty-two passengers of a bus stranded in floodwaters were also rescued in Quezon Province.
Disaster officials have already ordered forced evacuation in risky areas after some residents refused to leave their homes.
Financial markets, government offices and schools were closed Tuesday while several flights were canceled due to heavy rains.

As of 1 p.m., Maring was seen in the vicinity of Tanay, Rizal.
"Sa kasalukuyan nakakaapekto na nga itong core region ng bagyo sa Metro Manila area," PAGASA said in an update at 2 p.m.
"Maring" is expected to cross Bulacan and the upper part of Manila Bay towards Zambales.
Another tropical cyclone, Typhoon Lannie, is inside PAR but PAGASA said it has no direct effect on the Philippines. — with reports from AP
