UP still one of top 1,000 universities in the world

MANILA, Philippines — The University of the Philippines is still the country’s lone tertiary education institution in this year’s Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.

UP jumped to the 601-800 bracket from the >800 bracket last year.

THE World University Rankings lists the top 1,000 universities in the world. It uses 13 performance indicators covering the areas of teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income.

The country’s premier university got an overall score of 30.6.

"UP is largely seen as one of the best Filipino universities in national rankings and among the top institutions in Asia. Recent improvements include academic reputation and international faculty ratio," THE said on its website.

UP also placed in the 201-250 bracket of the Asia University Rankings and the BRICS and Emerging Economies Rankings and 367th in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings.

University of Oxford has been the world’s best university for two consecutive years, while the University of Cambridge moved to second place from fourth.

The National University of Singapore is still the best university in Asia, ranking alongside the University of Toronto at 22nd place.
