MANILA, Philippines — The Judicial and Bar Council on Thursday resumed the second day of public interviews of the candidates for the replacements of two Supreme Court associate justices retiring next month.

The applicants will replace Associate Justice Jose Perez and Associate Justice Arturo Brion who will retire on December 14 and December 29, respectively.

There are three justice aspirants who will face JBC executive committee Chair Angelina Sandoval-Gutierrez, regular members Maria Milagros Fernan-Cayosa, Jose Mejia and Toribio Ilao Jr. as they vie for the post.

They are Romulo Borja, Amy Lazaro-Javier and Joseph San Pedro.

On Wednesday, seven potential magistrates namely Persida Rueda-Acosta, Rita Linda Ventura-Jimeno, Rowena Apao-Adlawan, Japar Dimaampao, Samuel Martires, Ricardo Paras III (also a candidate for Sandiganbayan justice), and Noel Tijam were also interviewed by the JBC.

The JBC will conduct the public panel interviews at the Division Hearing Room of the Supreme Court New Building in compliance with Section 1, Rule 7 of the Rules of the JBC, which is mandated to screen applicants and send a shortlist to the president, who will make the appointments.

Seven other candidates for Supreme Court associate justice were already interviewed for a previous vacancy at the Supreme Court and will not need to face the JBC this time.

These are Apolinario Bruselas Jr, Alex Quiroz, Rosmari Carandang, Andres Reyes Jr. Stephen Cruz, Jose Reyes Jr and Renaldo Daway.
