PCL election set

Ben Serrano - The Philippine Star

BUTUAN CITY , Philippines   â€“ The Philippine Councilors League (PCL) is set to hold its election of new officers from March 5 to 7 at the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

Around 17,000 municipal and city councilors from all over the country are expected to attend the event, which will coincide with the 9th PCL Congress.

Sta. Josefa, Agusan del Sur Councilor Reynaldo Quijada, one of the aspirants for national president of the PCL, said around P300 million will be spent for the allowances, meals and transportation of the delegates during the three-day event.

“From the coffers of local government units from all over the country, they will be spending for the delegations they will send to the annual PCL event,” Quijada said.

He urged his colleagues to vote wisely.

Quijada said his decision to run for the top PCL post was not easy, considering his other rivals are moneyed and influential.

“It’s like David versus Goliaths,” he said.

Quijada said he would institute electoral and socio-economic reforms if he is elected national president.

He said he would ask the support of city and municipal councilors to pass a resolution urging President Aquino to immediately pass into law the Freedom of Information (FOI) bill.

“The FOI bill is the key in solving corruption. We in the PCL must strongly endorse this,” Quijada said.

He is also pushing for standard pay for barangay captains.
