Royal palm trees planted around Rizal Park

Evelyn Macairan - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The National Parks and Development Committee (NPDC) began planting royal palm trees around Rizal Park last week in line with its greening project.

The NPDC plans to plant at least 86 royal palm trees around the park.

The Philippines’ kilometer zero, which is located within Rizal Park on Roxas Boulevard, would soon be surrounded with royal palm trees.

The installation of the trees is part of the design made by architect Paulo Alcazaren.

Around 42 trees would be planted on the southbound side of kilometer zero stretching from Kalaw Avenue to Burgos Street, while 29 trees would adorn the northbound side.

Meanwhile, 15 royal palm trees would be placed along the center island.

Another improvement in Rizal Park is the ongoing construction of an P8-million flagpole in front of the monument of Dr. Jose Rizal.

The NPDC said a 150-foot flagpole will replace the existing 105-foot flagpole before Dec. 30, which would mark the centennial anniversary of the completion of the Rizal Monument.

With the flagpole’s added height, the NPDC said the raising of the new flag would then become mechanical.
