Human Rights Day 2019
The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines' social arm, NASSA, urges dioceses to ring churches' bells at 10 a.m. on December 10 for 10 seconds and celebrate Holy Mass at 5:30 p.m. or 6 p.m. to offer special prayers for the occasion of Human Rights Day.
Caceres Archbishop Rolando Tirona writes in a letter that the gesture is a manifestation of solidarity and reaffirmation of the Catholic Church's "commitment in defense of life."
"It is our simplest way to show empathy with the victims of human rights violations, of injustices and inequalities happening in our country and in the whole world," Tirona writes in a letter that Davao Archbishop Romulo Valles, president of the CBCP, endorses.
