Affected by the southwest monsoon or habagat, Metro Manila, Rizal and Central Luzon will have cloudy skies and scattered rainshowers or thunderstorms on Monday.

Brace for a rainy weekend! The country can expect scattered rains and thunderstorms today as the southwest monsoon continues to affect the western section of Luzon, state weather bureau PAGASA's advisory shows.

A low-pressure area that usually comes with rains was also spotted 1,135 kilometers east of Catanduanes over the Pacific Ocean.

Despite moving farther and no longer affecting the country, "Ester" continues to enhance the southwest monsoon or “habagat” which brings in the rain over the rest of the country.

The southwest monsoon currently affects the western section of Luzon, state weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration says.

In its advisory, PAGASA says monsoon rains will prevail over Pangasinan, Bataan and Zambales.

Metro Manila, rest of Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Batanes, Babuyan Group of Islands and rest of Central Luzon will experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and isolated thunderstorms

The rest of the country may experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms, PAGASA adds.

The state weather bureau issues red rainfall warning over Cavite area.

With this red warning level, serious flooding is expected in flood prone areas.

The Pagasa also issued yellow rainfall warning over Tarlac, Batangas and Laguna where possible flooding in low-lying areas is expected.

In its 8:30 a.m. advisory, Pagasa also said Metro Manila, Rizal, Zambales, Bataan, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan and Pampanga may experience persisting light to moderate with occasional heavy rains.

The state weather bureau PAGASA on Friday noon announces the start of the rainy season.

“The occurrence of widespread rainfall recorded in most PAGASA stations during the past few days due to southwest monsoon (Habagat) confirms the onset of the rainy season over the western part of the country,” the state weather bureau says in a statement.

PAGASA says that while the rainy season has started in the country, dry periods known as “monsoon break,” which lasts for several days to two weeks, may follow.
