Pfizer executives say they are confident of strong demand for the company's Covid-19 antiviral treatment amid easing pandemic rules as the big drugmaker reported another round of strong earnings.

The US pharmaceutical giant, reporting surging first-quarter profits based on a big jump in revenues from its Covid-19 vaccine, said its Paxlovid treatment for the virus would be a valuable means for governments to limit the severity of outbreaks as they ease social distancing and masking rules.

Pfizer Chief Executive Albert Bourla said the company is seeing "very strong signs of increasing demand for Paxlovid as it remains one of the best tools we have." — AFP

Pharmaceutical company Unilab addresses rumors that it is withholding stocks and increasing prices of flu, fever and cough medicines, which are in demand and short of supply in drug stores around the country as COVID-19 infections reach record levels.

In a statement, Unilab calls the situation "temporary" denies the rumors that Biogesic, Bioflu, Neozep, Solmux and Decolgen are being kept and sold for higher prices.

"The temporary out of stock situation in certain drugstores is due to the extraordinary high demand for products for fever, cough, colds and flu in certain areas of the country," it says.

"We continue to manufacture and in fact, increased the manufacturing volume of these products to serve the extraordinary demand."
