Vandolph Quizon shares advice for son Vito as he ventures into showbiz

Even as a child, Vandolph Quizon had already seen his son Vito’s interest in showbiz.
So it came as no surprise that the former “Goin’ Bulilit” star and grandson of the late “King of Comedy” Dolphy and veteran actress Alma Moreno was launched as one of the artists under Viva Artists Agency (VAA), alongside other children of prominent names in showbiz.
“When he was a kid, Tita LT (Lorna Tolentino) saw him in ABS-CBN and she urged him to audition for ‘Goin Bulilit.’ He auditioned and then nag-tuloy-tuloy na. Sa bahay pa lang, bibo na yan, he’s just like me,” proud dad Vandolph recalled.
He told The STAR that the career advice from his father, Dolphy, that stayed with him was to always remain grounded and it’s the same advice he has passed on to Vito.
“One piece of advice I always remind him of, which also came from my dad, is that once you reach a point na nakilala ka na, nandiyan ka na, just always keep your feet on the ground. Always stay humble and at the same time, love all your co-workers, di ka pwedeng (may) ere.”
When it comes to love life, he also advises Vito to take it easy and prioritize his studies. “‘Alalay lang ha,’ I told him. ‘Wag masyadong ma-in love. You’re still young. Don’t be like daddy. Nagka-anak ako when I was 17 or 18.”
Vito, 16, is a senior high student at National University and is also part of the university’s basketball team.
Vandolph was asked about his thoughts on how being the child of actors helped him enter the entertainment industry more easily, he modestly said, “Well, maybe it just so happened that the Lord blessed me with Dolphy as my father and Alma as my mother.
“Kung hindi rin naman ako marunong sa sarili ko umarte, ba’t ako papansinin. At least, kahit papano nakakuha ng genes kahit kunti. I finished three terms already in Parañaque (as councilor). So now I’m focusing on my business and children, sa paglilinis ng bahay, sa paglalaba. Hahaha!”
Recalling his fondest memories of his father, Vandolph shared that he misses their conversations and the times they would go on food trips together.
“When I was a child, whenever the principal called for my parents at school, I would ask my mother to go. So mga tatalong beses yun nanay ko lang pumupunta. The principal said, ‘Mr. Quizon, I want to meet your father next.’ I got nervous. And when he came, siyempre nag pa-picture (principal),” he furthered.
“Whenever there’s problem at school, pinapagalitan din ako ng tatay ko. Minsan lang magalit si erpat, soft-spoken pa rin pero tagos eh. You could really feel it.”
Dolphy was especially fond of Vito and often spoiled him, shared Vandolph. “Vito was only two years old that time. Imagine, he was in bed (Dolphy) and struggled to stand up but whenever I would bring Vito, his smile was different.”
Like his father and grandfather, Vito is a natural comedian and has a strong affinity for comedy.
If there’s a movie of Dolphy that they want to remake, Vito said that it would be the 1995 flick “Father En Son” which starred Dolphy and Vandolph. Interestingly, both Vandolph and Vito gave the same answer in separate interviews.
Speaking of movies, Vandolph will soon appear in “Home Along Da Riles: Da Reunion” which, according to him, will be shown in cinemas in time for Father’s Day this year.
The film is based on the ABS-CBN sitcom “Home Along Da Riles” (1992) which originally starred Dolphy and Vandolph.
“It’s also a tribute to my father,” said Vandolph. “The movie has been two years in the making because we backed out twice from the Metro Manila Film Festival. Siguro swerte din na nangyari yun dahil mas gumanda yung movie and we have a lot of surprises in the movie.
“Siyempre sabi nga nila, ‘Paano niyo gagawin yung ‘Home Along’ wala na si Dolphy?’…. We have a surprise na kami ang unang gagawa, and yes, it’s going to be shocking.”
Meanwhile, the other artists launched by VAA included Ashley Diaz, the granddaughter of the late Paquito Diaz and daughter of veteran actor Joko Diaz; Gabbi Ejercito and Icee Ejercito, daughters of Gary Estrada and Bernadette Allyson; and Jac Abellana, the son of another screen veteran Jojo Abellana.
They were joined by actor-comedian Anjo Yllana’s son, Jaime, as well as Rob and Ryan Walcher, sons of actress and former beauty queen Patricia Javier and renowned chiropractor Robert Walcher.
