Every now and then, the universe sends you a sign. Sometimes it comes in the form of a tip from a trusted source, a whisper in the hallways of a network or the electric buzz of social media comments that just won’t quit. And sometimes — the best kind of times — it comes in the form of a young man on your screen who makes you pause, rewind and whisper to yourself: “Wait. Who is that?” That’s exactly what happened when Mark Ian Garcia appeared on TV5’s newest hit, “A Secret In Prague.”

Before we get into the full story, let’s set the scene. TV5 has been quietly, deliberately and full of effort building something. And on May 5, those seeds officially blossom with the launch of Star Worx — the network’s newest talent development arm helmed by the Mr. M, Johnny Manahan, and sharp-eyed TV5 executive Jeff Remigio, a partnership that clearly has a nose for potential. But here’s what those in the know have been saying for a while: even before Star Worx had a name and will officially be launched as TV5’s talent arm, before the official launch, the talent pool was still under the banner of MQAA, and there was already gold in there.

A year after signing with TV5, Mark Ian has landed a cool new role on TV5’s buzziest drama, ‘A Secret in Prague,’ which has now climbed to the No. 1 spot on Netflix. He is playing Angelito, the charming, studious, bright- eyed younger brother of the show’s beloved lead character Mikoy, portrayed by Enrique Gil.

And one of those golden finds? A boy named Mark Ian. One year since signing with TV5, he landed a cool new role on TV5’s buzziest drama, “A Secret in Prague,” which has now climbed to the No. 1 spot on Netflix.

He is playing Angelito D. Pinagpala, the charming, studious, bright-eyed younger brother of the show’s beloved lead character Mikoy D. Pinagpala, portrayed by none other than the ultimate Kapatid himself, Enrique Gil.

At the VP Choice Awards, where the author receives the Entertainment News Reporter of the Year.

“I’m very thankful,” he said. “After waiting for more than a year, nabigyan po ako ng acting work… and nasali pa ako sa isa sa pinaka-malaking projects ng TV5 this year.”

Now, casting a younger sibling to one of the Philippines’ most iconic heartthrobs? That’s a tall order. The kid is able to have screen presence without overshadowing. He is endearing and will make you believe —  truly believe — that he belongs in that world, beside superstars.

From the moment he appeared on screen in episode one of “A Secret In Prague,” audiences noticed. Comment sections lit up. People were asking about him. Fans were calling him Angelito in real life because that’s the power of a character who sticks. And the boy, to his credit, took it all in stride with the kind of easy, unaffected charm that you simply cannot manufacture. There’s something about Mark Ian that works instantly. Maybe it’s the boy-next-door appeal. Maybe it’s the sincerity that seeps through even the smallest scenes. Or maybe it’s the way he doesn’t try too hard, and in doing so, he pulls you in even more.

Off-camera, he’s still wrapping his head around it all.

“Angelito! Sanay ka na ba matawag?” I asked him. He laughed, a little shy, a little amused. “Marami po tumatawag sa’kin sa comments… Angelito, kapatid ni Enrique Gil.”

Speaking of Enrique, while the onscreen brotherhood is convincing, what’s happening behind the scenes might be even more telling. Mark Ian told us, “Si Kuya Enrique… it’s more than just a brother sa kwento. He’s like a brother talaga sa set. Gina-guide niya ako… pinapagaan niya yung environment. Tinatanggal niya yung tension.”

Then there was a pause before he added, almost sheepishly, “Nahihiya pa rin po ako sa kanya… kasi he’s still Enrique Gil.” And yet, it’s in what follows that you understand why this pairing works beyond the script and he was the right choice.

“Pinaparamdam niya na hindi siya mas mataas sa akin… pantay kami. Isa ‘yon sa natutunan ko — to stay humble and treat everyone equally,” he said. And just like that, you see Mark Ian blended with disbelief and gratitude. What his story even more interesting is where he came from.

Before Star Worx, TV5 and “A Secret in Prague,” he was one of the country’s top lifestyle content creators, building a following online through authenticity and relatability. Then came Jeff, who reached out a year ago and cast him as a Vibe Jock first on TV5, absorbing the culture, finding his footing and waiting patiently for the role that would change everything.

“I’m very thankful,” Mark said, and there was nothing performative about it. “After waiting for more than a year, nabigyan po ako ng acting work and nasali pa ako sa ‘A Secret in Prague,’ isa sa pinaka-malaking projects ng TV5 this year.”

As TV5 officially launches Star Worx on May 5, Mark Ian stands as one of its most promising early faces among many who I will also get to know soon.

Watch him now as Angelito in “A Secret in Prague,” airing weeknights at 8 on Todo Max Primetime Singko on TV5 and Netflix.
