Diego Loyzaga: We’re all main characters in life

Young actor Diego Loyzaga has displayed his potential in the drama-action genre and as a nemesis via the TV5 primetime show, “Totoy Bato,” with Kiko Estrada in the titular role. Diego and Kiko’s dedication and commitment are shown in their portrayals that also make the “Totoy Bato” story engaging and compelling until its last finale episodes. It will have its season conclusion tomorrow.
In a recent presscon for the show’s grand finale week, Diego somehow reflected on insights he had gained in playing the villain Dwayne.
“Ang nakita ko, bilang isang kontrabida, lahat tayo in our own stories, tayo ang bida (what I’ve seen in taking on my villain character is: we’re all the lead characters in our own stories),” said he, “kasi para kay Dwayne, siya naman ang tama (for Dwayne, he’s right). Ang pakiramdam niya, kinuha ni Totoy ang lahat sa kanya (he feels that Totoy has taken everything from him). So, para kay Dwayne, wala siyang mali, kasi ang mali talaga ay si Totoy (in his perspective, he has done nothing wrong because Totoy is really at fault). So, that’s how we perceive our lives, in the same way.”
What he is telling one is that everyone is the bida in his or her own story. That also speaks of whose point of view may be viewed dominant, as one may put it.
“Tayo yung main character (we’re the main characters). Sometimes, medyo yung right and wrong, it’s very fine line (the line or the distinction that separates right from wrong is too fine),” said he. “Hindi mo na napapansin, na papunta ka na sa dark side (a person may not notice that he’s going to the dark side). I guess ang pinaka-magandang mensahe na nakita ko talaga (the most beautiful message from the show) is you have to be in touch with reality, kung ano ba talaga ang tama at mali (to know what’s really right from wrong).”
Asked if he is still game to portraying villain roles, Diego said, “Definitely, mas open ako sa idea na mag-play ulit ng kontrabida (I’m more open to the idea of playing villain again). Iba naman, iba naman kay Dwayne (one that’s different from my character).”
“Siyempre, kahit anuman ang ibigay sa akin, ibato sa akin, bida o kontrabida, papayag naman po ako dun (of course, whatever role is given to me — be it a lead or a villain — I’ll go for it),” added he, “Pero isang malaking stepping stone ‘to sa career ko na makapag-play naman ng bad guy (but it’s a big stepping stone in my career to play a villain) and mas maraming pwedeng gawin ang ano, eh, ang kontrabida (I can do a lot of things with it). Pwede kang maging siraulo, hindi ikaw ang laging mabait (one could play a crazy character and not always play the good guy).”
According to Diego, he enjoyed becoming and being Dwayne for “Totoy Bato” and acknowledged the contribution of the ensemble cast he worked with.
“Sinabi ni Kiko sa akin nung simula palang, ‘Diego, gusto ko talaga na ikaw ang maging kontrabida ko’ (Kiko told me from the start that he wanted me to be his character’s villain),” said he, “and to be honest, at the end of it now, I’m happy na ito ang nangyari. Yes, definitely, open pa ako sa mga kontrabida roles.”
Given the action-packed scenes that come with the show’s territory, Diego could attest to the importance of knowing the choreography behind every fight sequence between Dwayne and Totoy.
“Parang sayaw yan, eh (it can be likened to a dance),” said he. “If you forget some of the steps, kunwari dapat ilagan mo yung suntok na ‘to, tatama talaga (let’s say you need to dodge or avoid a punch and if you don’t, you’ll get hurt).”
“It was not easy. It was never easy, but it was fun,” added he about doing action. “It was so fun.”
