Several showbiz couples have tied the knot lately, such as Carla Abellana and Tom Rodriguez, Jennylyn Mercado and Dennis Trillo, and Ritz Azul and her non-showbiz boyfriend Allan Guy.
But the wedding of Derek Ramsay and Ellen Adarna on Nov. 11 at the Rancho Bernardo Luxury Villas in Bataan was, I think, both beautiful and controversial. The couple was picture-perfect during the ceremony: Ellen was resplendent in a strapless Marc Rancy gown with a thigh-high slit, while Derek was dashing in a Bianca Cordero suit. Tongues were wagging though because of their whirlwind engagement.
They only met in January this year through mutual friend John Estrada and confirmed to be in a relationship in February. In March, Derek gifted Ellen with a pear-shaped diamond engagement ring, and they announced that they were going to get married within the year. Both were in prior relationships that lasted several years: Ellen with John Lloyd Cruz with whom she has a son Elias, while Derek was with Andrea Torres. He also has a son, Austin, from a previous relationship.
Derek’s mom, Remedios Ramsay, believes that everything happens for a reason. In our brief e-mail “chat,” she explained why she thinks Derek and Ellen will defy the naysayers.
Describe Derek and Ellen as a couple. Why do you think they click?
“I think mainly because they are both REAL. What you see is what you get. They are both not afraid of what people will say so they continue to be honest and sincere about how they want to live their lives.”
What made the two of them “rush” into marriage?
“It’s no secret they both came from high-profile relationships that lasted over a year. Everyone was surprised it happened so fast but for me, things always happen for a reason, the reason being that my prayers were answered. I have been praying for so long that my son would find someone who loves him sincerely and will give him everlasting happiness. I can see now that my son is very happy when he is with Ellen, and likewise Ellen is the same. Everybody can see how happy Derek is now.”
Describe the wedding. How long were the preparations? How did you feel during the ceremony?
“The wedding was amazing! It was like stepping into another world so beautiful that you didn’t want to leave. Everything turned out exactly how they wanted it, on top of a mountain with a perfect sunset surrounded by so many lights and beautiful flowers.
“Preparations took two and a half months. During the first month, Derek, Ellen and I did not interfere with the wedding coordinator. But on the second month, there were ups and downs so Derek, Ellen and I started to get more involved. We worked hand-in-hand with the coordinator, and everything turned out to be perfect. We are very grateful to all the people who made this possible. I was happy, nervous, and thankful that my son finally found his partner.”
What are their plans now that they’re husband and wife? Will they still pursue their showbiz careers?
“As for their plans, I’m sure they will continue with their respective careers. Derek has a contract to do an international movie in Puerto Rico next year.”
