MANILA, Philippines — The search for the next Darna is on after an unfortunate incident happened to Kapamilya actress Liza Soberano. 

Since she backed out from playing the role due to an injured finger, fans are suggesting different celebrities to replace her in portraying the iconic superhero role. lists down some actresses being nominated by the fans to be the next Darna. Who’s your bet?

Nadine Lustre

One of the frontrunners for the Darna role is no less than Kapamilya actress Nadine Lustre. After all, "Nadine" sounds too close to "Narda," right?

Apart from fans’ clamor for her to wear the iconic costume, the movie’s former director, Erik Matti, said he personally chose Nadine to replace Liza, telling The STAR’s Ricky Lo: “I only see Nadine Lustre so far as someone who can be Darna. Very sultry. She has a lot of female sensuality and at the same time still looks tough and very Filipina.”

Nadine, however, said it still depends if she will accept the role: “I don’t know. It depends. I don’t really like saying that I don’t want to do it or not because mapupunta talaga ‘yan sa kung sinong deserve nung role na ‘yun eh.”

Pia Wurtzbach

Pia re-imagined as Darna. Asuncion

Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach has the face and body to become the next Darna. She also admitted that she wants to audition to play the Pinay superhero role. And if Star Cinema gives it to her, she vowed to accept it and work hard for it. 

Catriona Gray

Catriona re-imagined as Darna. Asuncion

Just like Pia, Catriona has what it takes physically to become the next super heroine. In reality, however, her schedule would not allow her to do the movie, although she said recently that she is open for the role. She also admitted: “Acting is a field that I don’t have any experience in, but I’m an eager learner and if an opportunity came to audition for a certain role, I would very much be open to it.”

Since she has a black belt in Choi Kwang-Do martial arts, fight scenes will surely be a no-brainer for her.

Maja Salvador

Maja re-imagined as Darna. Asuncion

Although Kapamilya actress Maja Salvador has the face, the body, and the moves to become the next Darna, she remained quiet if she will accept or decline the role after topping unofficial surveys. She, however, said that her doors remain open and she sympathizes with Liza.

Kathryn Bernardo

Kathryn re-imagined as Darna. Asuncion

Because of her morena features, Kapamilya actress Kathryn Bernardo is among those being urged by fans to fill in Darna’s shoes. Although Kathryn said she is a big Darna fan and said everyone wanted to become the superhero, she was quick to shut down speculations on her doing the role because she said she wanted the new Darna to be someone older than her.

Maymay Entrata

Maymay re-imagined as Darna. Asuncion

After stunning the nation with her modeling stints abroad, Kapamilya actress Maymay Entrata is one of the celebrities wanted by the fans to suit up the Darna role. Nonetheless, in her Instagram Live video, Maymay rejected the role because she said, “Hindi kasya ‘yung bra sa ‘kin.”

Maine Mendoza

Another top contender to play the iconic role is Kapuso actress Maine Mendoza. Although she has showcased her action skills in the last Metro Manila Film Festival movie “Jack Em Popoy,” the question now is will Star Cinema get a talent from the rival network to play the role?

Sanya Lopez

Sanya re-imagined as Darna. Asuncion

Kapuso actress Sanya Lopez proves that she is beautiful and sexy enough to play Darna, as seen in her latest movie, “Wild and Free.” Nevertheless, just like Maine, Sanya is from the rival TV network GMA.

Jennylyn Mercado

Jennylyn re-imagined as Darna. Asuncion

Unlike Sanya and Maine, Kapuso actress Jennylyn Mercado already did a movie with Star Cinema titled, “Just The Three Of Us,” with now on-leave Kapamilya actor John Lloyd Cruz. But again, is the Kapamilya network willing to give the iconic role to a star from its rival network?

Yam Concepcion

Yam re-imagined as Darna. Asuncion

Now that her hit teleserye “Halik” nears its end, Yam said in an interview that playing Darna is a big leap in an actress’ career because the actress who will play it will be written in history books, thus, she said she is open to audition. If not Darna, Yam said that she could also play the snake woman villain, Valentina, since she was an “ahas” in “Halik.”

Lovi Poe

Lovi re-imagined as Darna. Asuncion

Since people are clamoring for a “morena” Darna, one of the celebrities today with that skin type is Kapuso actress Lovi Poe. Since she has that quintessential Filipina look and body, Lovi might be a good choice to be the next Darna. Nonetheless, just like other Kapuso actresses in this list, is Star Cinema willing to give such a monumental role to an outsider? 

Since Star Cinema has opened the auditions to the public, it seems that artists from rival TV stations stand a chance.

Sarah Geronimo

Sarah re-imagined as Darna. Asuncion

Fans of Kapamilya singer Sarah Geronimo has been clamoring for their idol to take the Darna role for years now. In an interview with Sarah last 2017, before the role was given to Liza, Sarah said: “Eh ‘di wow! Gusto ninyo bang makakita ng Darna na naka-jumpsuit?”

Apart from knowing how to dance, which can enable her to memorize and execute fight scenes, Sarah undoubtedly has enough vocal power to shout “Darna!”

Will she finally come of age like Darna and break away from her conservative image to reveal a hidden sex appeal?
