Laurenti Dyogi: Maine without Alden will not work in PBB

MANILA, Philippines — Maine Mendoza, who was already doing dubmash videos then, did not make it to the “Pinoy Big Brother” house.

That is among the revelations of Laurenti Dyogi, TV Production Head of ABS-CBN, which has acquired the franchise to air the reality TV show.

In a video blog (vlog) published on July 3 on YouTube, the director admitted he felt sorry for not having Maine on PBB.

“Nanghihinayang ako kay Maine, pero without Alden (Richards), we don’t know if Maine will work in PBB lang. Eh nagwork ‘yung Maine and Alden sa ‘Eat Bulaga!’ ‘Yun ang kapalaran n’ya. Hindi ‘yun kawalan sa’min. Hindi talaga kami ang tamang paraan para sa kasikatan n’ya,” the director said in the video.

He showed Maine’s 2015 audition video for “PBB:737,” wherein the actress described herself as a 20-year-old culinary student. The video includes a footage of Maine dancing to the tune of the show’s theme song. Miho Nishida and Jimboy Martin were eventually named as winners that season.

Dyogi stressed that Maine did not line up for audition as she was scouted by one of ABS-CBN’s talent scouts named Marcus.

“Si Maine na-scout ‘yan ni Marcus… kasi sikat na s’ya in dubsmash that time. Eh hindi pa ko into digital that time… So Marcus felt that Maine would be interesting to be a housemate,” he explained.

He said he did not choose Maine because he felt like the show’s next big stars would come from those who lined up and not from those scouted.

“Nanghinayang ako kay Maine,” he confessed. “So maling call ko ‘yun.”

Similarly, he feared that Maymay Entrata “would be another Melai” Cantiveros without Edward Barber.

“Maymay with Edward worked. Maymay without Edward, hindi natin alam how will that happen,” he explained.

In the same way, he thinks Kim Chiu has been propelled into stardom because she found chemistry with Gerald Anderson at that time, and the same goes with Maine and Alden.

Although Kim and Gerald, and Maine and Alden have been doing projects separate from each other, Dyogi thinks their love teams were a big help in getting them where they are now.

Maine just celebrated her third anniversary in showbiz, while Alden is set to premiere his new GMA fantasy series, “Victor Magtanggol.” — Reports from Jan Milo Severo, video from Youtube/Direk Lauren Dyogi
