Direk Paul wants proposal to Toni Gonzaga private, intimate

Chuck Smith - The Philippine Star
MANILA, Philippines – Not a few fans expected movie director and producer Paul Soriano to propose to girlfriend Toni Gonzaga during her concert last Friday.

After all, the year saw a couple of very public celebrity proposals—particularly Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes' announcement of their engagement on live television and John Prats' flash mob proposal to Isabel Oli at a shopping center in Quezon City.

But Paul said he wants to propose to the actress-singer behind the cameras, in a more private setting.

“The proposal will happen behind the camera. I know a lot of Toni's life and our of our relationship are of public interest. But there are certain moments that we want to keep intimate,” he told Philstar.com and other members of the press at the sidelines of the 11th Golden Screen Awards on Saturday.

He added, “Of course, we will make kuwento once it all happens. Very soon.”

Paul was present during the awards night to represent the 2013 film “Transit,” which he produced. The movie won several awards at the 11th Golden Screen Awards, including the best picture and best director awards.

Is he and Toni feel pressured to take their relationship to the next level because of numerous celebrity engagements this year? Other stars who got engaged this year include Heart Evangelista and Sen. Francis Escudero, Bianca Gonzales and JC Intal, Aiza Seguerra and Liza Dino, Yeng Constantino and Victor Asuncion, and Chito Miranda and Neri Naig, among others.

“I know there are a lot of engagements this year. I guess that's because that is God's perfect time for them. I think we're still waiting for God's perfect time for us,” Paul said.

He added they're still enjoying “the successes of our individual careers.” Toni, for instance, had a concert, a box office hit movie, and a new album this year. Meanwhile, Paul reaping his success as a movie producer for films such as “Transit” and this year's “Dagitab” and “Mariquina.”

“No pressure... We have the rest of our lives to enjoy each other. So right now, focus muna sa career,” he said.

But Paul teases that the proposal could happen “very soon.”

“To be honest with you, I have not thought yet how am I going to propose. All I know is, she's the one for me. I'm still finding that way to propose,” he admits.

He added: “Maybe just like how do my films—I need to come up with this fresh and unique idea. Toni's hard to surprise. Toni's hard to catch, she's always so busy. So I need to find a right way to do it. And I know it will happen.”

The award-winning director-producer just finished working on “Kid Kulafu,” a movie about the childhood of boxer Manny Pacquiao.

“The film focuses on the first 15 years of his life and he became the successful boxer that he is today,” Paul said. “I'm gonna show you how he grew up, how he fell in love with boxing and how he worked hard.”
