Love with no strings attached

MANILA, Philippines - Joey Reyes once more taps into his creative genius to weave a unique tale of love involving a number of characters in Regal Entertainment, Inc.’s latest offering, Somebody To Love.

Regal matriarch Mother Lily Monteverde gave direk Joey the break he needed as a director via Regal Shockers a few decades ago.

Before he became a director, direk Joey made a name for himself as a scriptwriter whose creative juices brought about over 200 stories. After Regal Shockers, he became a sought-after megman for diverse genres and was multi-awarded at that.

Some of his more popular works are Batang PX, May Minamahal, Makati Avenue (Office Girls) and the Judy Ann Santos-Ryan Agoncillo starrers Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo, Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo and My House Husband.

Direk Joey is also known for handling films that boast of ensemble acting. His indie movies Mga Mumunting Lihim and Ano Ang Kulay ng mga Nakalimutang Pangarap? received rave reviews and various recognitions as well.

In his new movie Somebody To Love, direk Joey is able to create another vehicle that would cater to those in search of someone to love.

He finds so much challenge in directing several actors in one project. Handling an ensemble drama serves as his tribute to the late directors and National Artists Ishmael Bernal and Lino Brocka. And part of his objective is to introduce Brocka and Bernal to the young generation through his works.

What can moviegoers expect from Somebody To Love?

“One thing, it’s new. We haven’t seen something like this for the longest time. Secondly, it’s real characters. May mga totoong character. Gaya ng mga taong magkasama kayo, pero wala kayong commitment. Until there comes a point in time na kailangan ninyo ng commitment pero pareho kayong assuming. Pareho kayong takot. Nawawala ang inyong relasyon,” the writer-director points out.

For her part, Mother Lily thinks Somebody To Love is Regal’s most expensive production for the year. And for a good reason: This serves as her birthday presentation. Somebody to Love is earmarked for an Aug. 20 release, a day after the Regal matriarch’s birthday.

“How do you define love? That is the subject. There are many kinds of love. Very practical ang movie na ito. Nakikita ninyo at makaka-identify kayo sa isa’t isa. This movie is so important for everybody in showbiz,” says Mother Lily.
