Émigré Au Pair Academie opens in Makati

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A unique training center dedicated to training Au pairs recently opened in Makati. Émigré Au Pair Academie is the first of its kind in the country, offering complete training courses such as foreign language proficiency, culture immersion, how to adapt to matched host families in Europe plus visa procurement and documentation assistance.

“Au Pair” is a French term that literally means, living on equal terms. It is a cultural exchange program designed for young individuals or professionals who want to learn the culture and language of another country, particularly in Europe, for their career advancement. An Au Pair is neither a student nor a worker but has both features — they learn and earn while in a foreign country, usually European. In the US, Au pairs are covered under the US Exchange Visitors Program and are issued J-1 visas, while in Europe, au pairs are given either “au pair” visa (Germany) or long-stay visa (Switzerland, Austria).

Under the Émigré Au Pair program, their trainees learn the language and culture by immersion, living with the foreign host family for a year, who in turn provide them with free board and lodging, formal language schooling while the Au Pair can earn allowance/pocket money of up to P35,000. Opportunities for career advancement abound, such as the recent announcement from Germany stating that it would hire 500 nurses from the Philippines. However, to be able to work in Germany, or anywhere in Europe, one has to be proficient in their language. Learning a foreign language is not only expensive but requires years to be proficient. Becoming an Au Pair is the perfect short-cut towards a long-term career in Europe.

Émigré Au Pair Academie director, Stefan Schleicher announced that “we are giving priority to young nursing graduates since there are so many of them who are unemployed here, yet there is a great need for them in Europe.” Last month for example, Jaja Santiago Vasquez, a 24-year-old nursing graduate from Bulacan left for Zurich, Switzerland for a one-year stint under the Émigré Au pair program. Émigré negotiated through their Swiss partners for an all-expense paid agreement with the host family: Roundtrip ticket, room and board, visa application, medical fees, insurance and other expenses involved in acquiring a European visa.
