Bucking the sophomore jinx

- Philip Cu-Unjieng -

People in the recording industry often make mention of the “sophomore jinx;” how after a well-received debut album, the second effort falls by the wayside or never manages to meet expectations. I really loved the first albums of these two acts, and am happy to report that music-wise, there’s even more to like with these brand new second efforts.

The Script — Science and Faith (RCA Records). While there may be no track that jumps out like in the first CD, this is a much more consistent, solid outing from our trio of Dublin boys. Channeling U2, Keane and infusing hip-hop rhythms, The Script has come up with a sound that is unique and yet familiar at the same time. Personally, I find the latter half of the CD even stronger than the first half. With If Ever You Come Back, Long Gone and Moved On and Dead Man Walking, I felt the CD really hit its stride. This Love is another strong candidate for favorite track. And it’s their penchant with coming up with a crack chorus that makes these songs such easy songs to fall in love with and sing along to. A sophomore CD that truly deserves a listen, and should solidify The Script’s growing reputation.

Sara Bareilles — Kaleidoscope Heart (Epic Records). After her first CD Little Voice and the carrier single Love Song, you just knew that here was one extremely talented singer/songwriter with substance and an uncanny ear for creating the killer chorus (again!). King of Anything is the lead track for this new CD and it sparkles in vintage Bareilles fashion. The a capella rendering of the first track Kaleidoscope Heart may seem a tad indulgent, but when Uncharted blasts on your speakers, we know she hasn’t lost the touch! Gonna Get Over You and Say You’re Sorry are two winsome tracks that pay homage to old-time musical stylings, and they work. The ambitious track is Let It Rain, but after repeated listenings, it has become one of my favorites. A second outing she can be proud of.
