The Script reveals what they love about Filipinos
MANILA, Philippines — Despite the difference in culture, rock band The Script believes they have a lot of similarities with their Filipino fans.
The Irish trio — Danny O'Donoghue, Glen Power and Mark Sheehan — were in the country for the fourth time last weekend for the Manila leg of their "Freedom Child" tour.
In an interview a few hours before their show in Manila, The Script said that they were "pretty lucky" as a band due to the "great crowd" that they have wherever they go to.
"What I always remember about the Philippines was that when we first played here, we played in the 'Thrilla in Manila.' We played that venue where we watched Muhammad Ali and (Joe) Frazier," lead vocalist Danny O'Donoghue said, referring to the Araneta Coliseum.
The Script first performed at the Araneta Coliseum in 2011. At that the time, O'Donoghue said they did not expect such overwhelming reception from Filipinos.
"We were just expecting to get off the plane and maybe play to a few hundred people, but the welcome that we received was unbelievable considering none of us are from here, we don’t speak Filipino," O'Donoghue said.
"That really kind of set off the relationship that we have that every time we have a tour we come back in the Philippines, I just remember my ears ringing from the crowd just singing every song, every word, not just the chorus," he added.
The frontman said that despite being Irish, the band has similarities "in the inside" of their hearts with their Filipino fans — heart, passion, love, lyrics and music.
The rock band's fourth concert in Manila served as their most interactive show so far as the members went down the stage in the middle of the show to perform among the crowd. — Video by Patricia Lourdes Viray
