CEBU, Philippines — Aloguinsan clawed its way back into contention with back-to-back victories, while Boljoon showed an admirable never-say-die spirit in the 2nd Mayor Inocentes Cabaron Inter-Town Invitational Basketball Tournament over the weekend at the Moalboal covered court.

After losing to Dumanjug in its debut, 75-85, Aloguinsan turned to the explosive performance of Andre Caminos Cuizon to pull off a thrilling 93-91 escape over Argao.

Cuizon netted 22 points, while Jan Debutac and Reggie Cuerda added 17 points apiece as they helped Aloguinsan pull the rug from under Argao afer being down by six points, 42-48, at halftime.

A day later, it was Debutac’s turn to shine, nailing three 3-pointers of his 17 points as Aloguinsan mauled Badian, 72-60, to improve its record to 2-1 in Bracket A. Badian dropped to 1-2, while Argao is at 0-1.

On the other hand, Kenjie Gumera hit a buzzer-beating 3-point bomb as Boljoon frustrated Alcantara, 82-80, to barge into the win column.

Trailing 53-60 after three quarters, Boljoon slowly chiseled the deficit away behind the efforts of Gumera and Epoy Caneda, who combined for 19 points in the final period.

Alcantara could have swung the tide on its favor but Rutchen Jay Libato botched two crucial free throws in the last 12 seconds.

In the ensuing sequence, Gumera sank a second attempt from beyond the arc off his own miss as the time expired to lift Boljoon to a nerve-wracking triumph.

Gumera finished with 22 points, while Caneda chipped in 21 markers.

John Kelvin Macasaol and JC Ypanto connived for 37 points, while Libato and Zairo Lambo each scored 12 but their efforts went for naught as Alcantara crashed to its third consecutive defeat.

Meanwhile, ex-pro Jojo Tangkay sizzled with 28 points while JR Nalos tossed in 18 points as Dumanjug clobbered Ronda, 103-85, to go 2-0 in the two-month tilt that offers P200,000 to the champion. — (FREEMAN)
