Keeping the dream alive Ex-ALA boxer Rey Caitom makes triumphant return

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  Former ALA Gym mainstay Rey Caitom Jr. made a triumphant comeback from a 12-year absence, beating the veteran Indonesian journeyman Silam Serang by unanimous decision over four rounds in their minimumweight duel under the Ring Fighting Championships presented by the Golden Glove Asia Promotions on Friday night at the Ring Boxing Community in Singapore.

In introducing himself back in the highly competitive boxing arena, Caitom, a six-time national amateur champion and erstwhile member of the popular ALA Boys more than a decade ago, was not after a knockout. He stay focused, threw punches whenever he can, and put up a solid defense, never allowing Sirang to land a dangerous punch on him.

"I used my jab, speed and power to take control of the fight," said Caitom, who fought to a majority draw with fellow countryman Ruel Lagunero in his last ring appearance as a fighter on July 22, 2006 at the Island City Mall in Tagbilaran City, Bohol. "And although he is more experienced than me, he didn't hit me with a clear shot."

The 32-year-old Caitom, who worked as a trainer and coach at the Unbeatable Boxing and Fitness Training Pte. Ltd. based in Singapore after a sudden stop as a boxer and trainer under Cebu's fabled ALA stable, revived his dream to become an established champion after realizing that he still has enough strength to pursue his ultimate goal.

Caitom, who improved his undefeated record to seven wins and one draw, plans to climb up the ring again in March 2019.

"I would like to thank all my friends, relatives and family back home for their prayers and support. This victory keeps me more motivated," said the Mandaue City-native Caitom, now handled by Ringstar Promotions. "I will continue fighting, train hard and work hard as before so I could get big fights and hopefully become a champion one day. That's my big goal in my boxing life." — EBV
