Top Cebu players to compete in San Carlos City chessfest

CEBU, Philippines —  Around 30 top-rated Cebuano pawn pushers will be seeing action in the 2018 San Carlos City Charter Open Chess Tournament on June 16-17 at the Barrio Fiesta Restaurant of Center Mall in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental.

Leading the cast of Cebuano contenders in this weekend's 8-round Swiss system competition are National Masters Rommel Ganzon, Leonardo Alidani, Edsel Montoya, Arnolito Cadiz and Anthony Makinano.

The others include Ronald Ganzon, Bryll Arellano, Bonn Tibod, Joel Pacuribot, Christopher Tubalado, Reynaldo Flores, Peterson Sia, Michael Pagaran, Jethro Capurino, Mario Mangubat, Erwin Ababat, and Carlos Moreno III.

They are expected to face tough opposition from the equally formidable local players of Negros Island in the tournament billed as "Cebu vs Negros Match-up".

The open division champion will pocket P15,000, while the second to fifth placers will take home P10,000, P5,000, P2,500 and P1,500, respectively. Those who will make it to the top 10 will receive P1,000 each.

On the other hand, the top finisher in the 16-Under category will get P5,000, while the second to fifth will win P2,500, P1,500, P1,000 and P700. The sixth to 10th will have consolation prize of P300.

Aside from the hefty cash prizes, the organizing San Carlos City Chess Club under the leadership of Henry Silva also offers free meals, snacks, and accommodation for all out-of- town participants.

Sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), the two-day tilt backed up by San Carlos LGU headed by Mayor Gerardo Valmayor, Jr. is among the highlights of the city's annual Charter Day celebration on July 1.

Entry fee is pegged at P300 for the 16-under and P350 for the open category.
