Getting sponsors interested

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

The long weekend is over and life is back to normal for many. Today, we expect a big crowd again at the Cebu Coliseum with two championship games to be played at the Cebu Coliseum.

The University of Cebu is gunning for a sweep of the best-of-five collegiate finals against Southwestern University.

Game 2 was a thriller and SWU under coach Raul ‘Yayoy’ Alcoseba is expected to put up everything it can today to stay alive.

This high school series is split between the University of the Visayas and Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu.

The series is down to a best-of-three and while UV looks to be the more formidable of the two squads, SHS could not be counted out as twice this season it has proven that it can beat a giant in the local basketball scene like UV.

Game 1 went to SHS via a very convincing fashion, but UV came back with an even bigger win in game 2.

The winner of today’s game is most likely going to win the high school series.

I would say that it is still very close to call and I’m sure there would be many who would troop to the Cebu Coliseum this afternoon to watch the action.

A football tournament organizer asked me if I knew of somebody willing to sponsor a tournament.

So I asked him if he can give me details as to how many teams are playing, how many players would be involved, the dates, and many more tournament information.

I did not get any reply.

I asked how much is his projected cost of the tournament? I also did not get a reply.

While more people willing to organize events, they must also learn to do things properly.

Sponsors are now careful about spending money. Times are hard and every peso that a business spends must be spent wisely.

New organizers must bear in mind that friendships alone would not mean willingness of sponsors to help your event. If ever they do it on that account, usually you only get a token amount because of your friendship.

If you want to hold a sporting event, have a budget. Unless you know how much it will cost you, you will not know how much to ask.

Aside from having a budget, have a good picture of what you intend to happen. Know how many teams would be playing, how many players, how many people do you expect at the venue, and many more details that can interest the sponsors.

It would help that you know somebody from the company you are tapping to sponsor, but if your event doesn’t draw the people who are their market, you are most likely to be turned down.
