Zubiri Rodeo Cup: Zubros Brothers lead 1-2-3 finish by Bukidnon cowboys

CEBU, Philippines – The visiting Zubros Brothers led a 1-2-3 finish by Bukidnon teams in the non-cattle load carrying event yesterday in the 2nd Senator Juan Miguel F. Zubiri National Rodeo Cup 2009.

Senator Zubiri was in hand to cheer his hometown teams as they dominated other contestants.

Earlier in the day, Zubiri himself opened the competition opened the competition at the rodeo track beside Parkmall in Mandaue City.

The other triumphant Bukidnon teams were The Kalasungay Wranglers and LGU Libona Rodeo Team.

“We are trying to revive rodeo here in the Philippines and promote it as an internationally acclaimed sport and as a lifestyle,” said Zubiri.

The rodeo competition attracted other teams including Benguet State University Highlanders, Wagling Ranch, Vanqueros Bravos, Los Masoñeros, Basta Negros Oriental, VSU AREV Rodeo Team and West Roc Vaqueros 1.

The presence of other teams delighted Zubiri, he said, “We want the world to know that we Filipinos are competitive also in this sport and I am glad that in our second year, different cowboys from the different parts of the country really went here to participate in this national event.”

The rodeo competition resumes today. Cowboys will battle each other in the rugged carambola contest, tug-of-war, bull riding, rope and tie, lassoing on foot, team roping and steer/calf undercoating. –THE FREEMAN
