Policemen to courier firms: Check parcels thoroughly

Iris Hazel Mascardo - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  The Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) is appealing to courier service companies to thoroughly checking the parcels they are transporting as the latest haul of illegal drugs was found to have been shipped through a parcel from Sulu.

Over the weekend, the CCPO had seized at least 5,390 grams of suspected shabu from 38 individuals arrested in a series of operations.

At least 55 individuals were also arrested during operations against illegal gambling while four were arrested for possession of loose firearms.

The biggest haul of illegal drugs was from the operations of Police Stations 11, and 4, where at least a combined 116 grams of suspected shabu were seized from both stations.

Lt. Colonel Maria Theresa Macatangay, information officer of CCPO, said they found out that the bulk of illegal drugs, particularly those confiscated by the Station 4, were believed to have been shipped from Sulu in Mindanao to Cebu.

"Gipadala ni diri, gamit ang ginatawag na JRS, so naa sya sulod sa parcel," said Macatangay.

Macatangay, on behalf of the CCPO, appeals to courier service companies to establish a practice that thoroughly checked parcels prior to their shipment.

"Kay mao man ni ang means nganong nakaabot ang mao nga butang gikan sa Sulu Mindanao, padung diri sa atoa sa Cebu City," said Macatangay.

Currently, the Station 4 or the Mabolo Police Station, is now coordinating with the courier service company where the parcel of illegal drug was shipped through.

This is to trace the sender of illegal drugs shipped from Sulu.

According to Macatangay, this method of transportation has been used by drug dealers before.

"It's now new, that is for sure, probably, nalang siguro mga procedure nga na-overlooked somewhere, nganong nabuhat na, isa sad sa among imbestigahan," said Macatangay.  — LPM (FREEMAN)
