13 landslides in Cebu due to heavy rains

Jean Marvette A. Demecillo - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Disaster teams of Cebu City government were busy clearing roads in mountain parts of the city as heavy rains in the previous days caused 13 minor and major landslides.

Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council head Nagiel Bañacia said the recorded landslide incidents happened in six sitios in Barangay Mabini, three sitios in Barangay Adlaon, as well as in Barangays Sudlon I, Pulangbato, Busay, and lower Malubog.

Majority of these landslides happened last Wednesday.

"Wala'y injuries, wala'y houses affected, only roads. Mao'ng naa'y some parts of the barangays mentioned that are impassable as of the moment (yesterday) kay atong gihuwat nga mauga ang yuta kay piligro pod nga modahili siya," he told reporters.

As of yesterday, Bañacia said only two sitios in Barangays Mabini and Pulangbato are impassable, though these roads have alternative routes.

With this, he said it would not affect the vehicular traffic situation in the barangays.

Even as the rain has stopped yesterday, Bañacia said disaster teams are still on standby to respond to any untoward incidents.

But he urged the barangay disaster teams to be activated since it is the responsibility of the barangays concerned to respond immediately especially when incidents are minor.

He said the city government will intervene if the incident involves three or more sitios.

"Mao'ng hangyo pud mi sa atong barangay captains nga mopalit gyud og chainsaw para maka-respond sila if there are trees nga nangahulog and other equipment nga maka-respond sila sa minor landslides like pala and others," he said.

Bañacia said the city government will provide heavy equipment needed like the backhoe and payloader, among others. (FREEMAN)
