FOI bill’s passage campaign launched

Mylen P. Manto - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Reiterating its call for the passage of the Freedom of Information Bill, the Kaabag sa Sugbo yesterday launch its sign on campaign to express support for the proposed measure.

Mark Vincent Alabastro, Kaabag sa Sugbu program officer, however, told The FREEMAN that their organization is not aiming for record numbers to join in their battle.

He said their activity is a continuous campaign for the passage of the FOI Bill.  Those interested could either access a form online through www.change.org/TayoNaParaSaFOI or by filling up a physical copy of the form.

He added that yesterday’s event was a simultaneous activity in major cities and schools in Luzon and in Mindanao.

In yesterday’s campaign, media personalities, Kapisanan ng Broadkaster ng Pilipinas, law groups, non-government organizations, representative from academe and student organizations were invited to join.

KBP president Jun Tagalog reiterated their position to really support passage of the FOI Bill.

He hoped the bill would be passed during the term of President Benigno Aquino III, who has made Daang Matuwid (straight path) as his administration’s mantra.

Princess Ann Halasan, University of the Visayas student council officer, said passage of FOI Bill is very important.

“As a student, it is very much important for me because we are entitled to know all the information especially on what’s going on in the government,” she said.

Lawyer Rose Versoza of the Cebu Citizens Press Council also said FOI is not just beneficial to the media people but also to all ordinary citizens.—(FREEMAN)
