Gullas says Joavan should be in rehab

CEBU, Philippines - “No one should be above the law.”

This was the reply of 1st district Rep. Eduardo Gullas when asked what he would do, if elected mayor, to the controversial son of incumbent Talisay Mayor Socrates Fernandez.

Gullas said that he would instruct police officers in Talisay to enforce the law no matter what, regardless of who is involved.

He said that he has already given Mayor Fernandez his advice three years ago  after the latter’s adopted son figured in a string of brushes with the law including the alleged possession of illegal drugs.

“I have already adviced Mayor Soc na isulod sa drug rehabilitation center,” said Gullas.

Gullas said that after the recent controversies the younger Fernandez has been involved with, he has not called the attention of Mayor Fernandez. But he said that his advice three years ago still remains and that it would be best for Joavan to be confined in the rehabilitation center.

Although he understood the struggle the mayor had in making a decision as a father, Gullas said that he told Mayor Fernandez that he is also the father to more than 200,000 Talisaynons.

Further, Gullas denied that they have imposed a ban on the younger Fernandez to join campaign sorties involving his father.

“I have not seen him in any of our sorties but I don’t think there is a ban because we are living in a democratic country.”

Mayor Fernandez is a close ally of Gullas under the Alayon party. The 1st district representative is on his last term and is seeking the mayoral post while incumbent mayor Fernandez is one of the party’s bet for the city council. Last week, Joavan allegedly harassed a homeowner in Talisay when she refused to have a campaign poster posted in her property. Florita Rosas reported to the police that Joavan got a gun from his car and continued on posting the campaign poster.

After that incident though, Fernandez has not been seen during campaign sorties of his father.— (FREEMAN)
