DepEd asked to resolve cases vs tardy teachers

- Jessica Ann R. Pareja -

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu City Vice Mayor Joy Augustus Young asked the Department of Education to prioritize the resolution of cases against tardy teachers.

Young had received several text messages from parents and teachers complaining against tardy teachers in public elementary and high school in the city.

Young said he wrote a letter to DepEd-7 Director Recaredo Borgonia and DepEd Cebu City Division Superintendent Rhea Mar Angtud requesting them to immediately resolve the cases filed before their office. Young also requested the two DepEd officials to investigate other reports that he has been receiving.

Young, chairman of the City Council committee on education, said he could not believe that DepEd recorded teachers complained for tardiness from only three of the 120 schools in the city.

“This is impossible. I’ve been receiving a lot of complaints from other schools. I would like to call the attention of the principal. The principal must monitor the performance of the teachers and report instances of tardiness. Ang uban siguro dili lang ireport, doktoron lang ang documento ba. That’s why I want all schools to use biometrics,” he said.

The vice mayor was able to obtain a copy of the charges filed against tardy teachers last year. But he said most of the cases have not been resolved until now.

“This is a big case, bigger than what we think it is. If not resolved, this is prone to abuse. It opens a way for a bigger violation,” Young said.

Not only the students, but also the government that is most disadvantaged in this situation because these teachers are paid almost P20,000 a month, yet they only rendered poor performance in return.

Young said that most of these tardy teachers are in the urban areas. He said that their problem with the teachers in mountain barangays have been resolved long time ago since they prioritized the hiring of teachers from those areas.

He wants the schools in urban areas to start using the biometric system of recording the time in and time out of teachers because punching of daily time records can be cheated.

He said some teachers just ask their fellow teachers to punch their card while they are outside.   (FREEMAN NEWS)
