Detainee escapes from Danao City jail
CEBU, Philippines - A 27-year-old prisoner was able to escape from the Danao City Police Office after he was allowed out to throw garbage Friday evening.
Ryan Cola Zamora of Barangay Looc was arrested some three months ago for stealing and is facing a case for qualified theft.
At around 9:00 p.m. last Friday, Zamora threw garbage outside the headquarters as an alibi. He was escorted by SPO3 Quirino Vasquez.
PO2 Marlon Remollo, duty desk officer, told The FREEMAN that before Zamora’s escape, prisoners of the police station were asked to clean their cells, guarded by their jail guard.
Remollo was not certain if Zamora volunteered or was assigned to the task, but Zamora was accompanied by the duty jail guard that time.
Based on the investigation, Zamora was throwing the garbage but when he noticed that Vasquez was far from him, he immediately run and boarded a motorcycle parked just outside the police precinct.
Vasquez was chasing the two when the black XRM Honda motorcycle with plate number 8736-JA driven by Carlito Barriga of sitio Guisoc, Barangay Tuburan grazed the gutter and fell.
Vasquez was able to catch up but lost his grip on the two, who were both able to run.
Remollo said Barriga used to be their prisoner but was able to put up bail.
Vasquez, a radio operator and the then duty desk officer, was alone at the precinct the night the incident occurred. Remollo said the rest of the officers conducted a roving patrol.
Vasquez was restricted and might be facing charges for infidelity in the custody of a prisoner.
The FREEMAN tried to get the side of Vasquez but he refused to be interviewed.
Aside from Zamora, there were six other prisoners in the Danao City jail. The police are now conducting hot pursuit operation. (FREEMAN)
