Rama eyes replacing city fire marshall

- Razel V. Cuizon/JMO -

CEBU, Philippines – Mayor Michael Rama is eyeing of replacing Fire Marshall Esmael Codilla reportedly because the latter has stayed in his post far longer than required.

"It's probably about time… kung naay bag-ong mayor ug duna sa'y bag-ong chief of police, kinahanglan duna na sa'y bag-ong fire marshall kay naka-serve naman siya og enough time," Rama said.

Rama, however, emphasized his plan has nothing to do with complaints he received from residents of Barangay T. Padilla on the manner by which the city's firemen responded to the massive fire in F. Villa Street last Monday.

The mayor himself said earlier that the fire department lacked quickness in response and their lack of equipment affected their operation during the fire. Over 3,000 individuals lost their homes in the incident.

The mayor said he will consult the Department of Interior and Local Government on his decision, considering that the Bureau of Fire is under DILG.

Rama yesterday formed an action team to lead in addressing the needs of the fire victims. He also urged all sectors to give a helping hand.

"Everybody should be connected and be involved just like a spider web," Rama added.

Also yesterday, the Visayan Electric Company (VECO) and the city's engineering brigade started installing lights at the evacuation areas - the second floor of the T. Padilla Public Market, the Day Care Center in the barangay, and the Sports Complex of the neighboring barangay Tejero.

The Metropolitan Cebu Water District also provided water to the fire victims.

Rama assured yesterday the construction materials, which will be given to the fire victims for them to rebuild their homes will be available today.

Rama already instructed the Department of Engineering and Public Works and the City Planning and Development Office along with other concerned department to reblock the whole area before residents will be allowed to rebuild their houses.

Under the reblocking, Rama wants existing roads and alleys to be widened, enough for fire trucks and other emergency vehicles to be able to pass in times of emergencies. (THE FREEMAN)
