Public elementary and high school students up

CEBU, Philippines - The number of students who enrolled in the various public elementary and high schools in Cebu City for this school year has increased to 146,177 or 1,880 more compared to the enrollees last year, education officials announced yesterday.

Rhea Mar Angtud, the district superintendent of the public elementary and high schools in Cebu City, said Guadalupe Elementary School has the highest number of students that reached 5,288 followed by the Cebu City Central School with 4,773 enrollees.

The statistics showed that the city only had 144,297 students in the various public elementary and high schools in school year 2009-2010, but maybe because of the economic crisis some students from the private schools have transferred to public learning institutions.

Department of Education planning officer Feloisa Catingub said the enrollees in elementary schools in the city had increased by 1,609 and 271 in high schools.   Male students dominate the city’s public elementary schools, but not in the secondary level where there are more female students, Angtud said.

There are 51,689 male pupils and 47,167 female students in the various public elementary schools of the city, while in high school there are 23,244 males and 24,077 females.

While the number of enrollees in some schools increased, the statistics showed that there is less number of pupils in Lahug Elementary School this school year.

The records showed that Lahug Elementary School previously had 5,509 pupils last year, but the figure went down to 4,890 this year.

If Guadalupe Elementary School has the highest number of pupils in the elementary category, Abellana National School had the highest number of high school students with 6,383 including night students.  (FREEMAN NEWS)
