Former barangay treasurer charged  for malversation

The Office of the Ombudsman-Visayas has indicted a former barangay treasurer of Poblacion, Sogod town for alleged malversation of public funds using falsified documents.

Overall deputy ombudsman Orlando Casimiro approved the recommendation of its Visayas office to file 30 counts of malversation of public funds through falsification of commercial documents against former barangay treasurer Nadine Menchavez.

The Ombudsman has found probable cause to charge Menchavez after a fact finding investigation was conducted into the complaint of the Poblacion barangay council.

Poblacion barangay captain Marlon Dosado claimed that Menchavez forged his signature for her to withdraw the barangay funds on several occasions since 2002.

She also allegedly altered the amount of some of the checks that were drawn from the account of the barangay at the Development Bank of the Philippines.

Menchavez also allegedly failed to liquidate her cash advances in the amount of P15,537.25 for which the Ombudsman also filed another count of malversation of public funds.

The anti-graft office said it has given Menchavez the chance to submit her counter-affidavit but the she allegedly failed. — Fred P. Languido/LPM
