Man dies in road mishap

-
A man was killed on the spot after the multicab he was driving collided head-on with a cargo truck at past 10:30 a.m. yesterday along the national highway in barangay Balud, San Fernando town, after he overtook a vehicle he was following.

Winston Yap Lee, 51, a resident of St. Jude Acres, Bulacao, Pardo, Cebu City, was driving his white multicab with plate number UKL-921 when it collided with an Isuzu forward cargo truck with plate number GJR-705 driven by Jerry Casagda, 30, married, a resident of Tabunok, Talisay City.

PO3 Ricardo Maquiso, who investigated the incident, said Lee was heading south following another vehicle and overtook it, running into the truck as he did so.

The impact of the collision sent the multicab into a spin and it stopped facing the direction it had come in.

"Mao toy hinungdan nga napiit si Lee sa iyang sakyanan tungod sa kakusog sa impact, dako ang de karga unya gamay ang multicab," Maquiso said.

The multicab was loaded with assorted dried goods and junk food for a grocery store in Carcar town.

The victim's body was retrieved by responding emergency rescue personnel of Naga and Carcar towns past noon yesterday and brought him to the Carcar Emergency Hospital, about 10 kilometers away from the place of incident, but it was clear he was killed by the impact of the collision.

Casagda fled right after the incident but later surrendered to the traffic division of the Tabunok Police Sub-Station.

A man who introduced himself as Lee's manager went to San Fernando Police Station to check Lee's personal belongings. Marquiso said they were too busy to identify him but gave him the items found on Lee's which included a bag and P1,000 cash.

Marquiso said that they are now preparing a case of homicide through reckless imprudence against Casagda. - Norvie S. Misa
