Uptown Cebu's newest attraction authentic Chinese flavors served up at Wang Shan Lo

- Nathalie Tomada -
There's a new Chinese restaurant in town that promises to treat you to a feast fit for an emperor-Wang Shan Lo.

Wang Shan Lo, the fine-dining outlet of Club Ultima, sits at the 20th floor of Tower 2 of Fuente Towers along Osmeña Boulevard. The sweeping view of the skyline and of uptown Cebu through its glass windows and patio renders a dining experience that can be described as breathtaking.

Executive Chinese Chef Ming of Hong Kong, whose portfolio of experiences included working at top Chinese restaurants from Hong Kong to Manila before moving here to open Wang Shan Lo, is backed by a brigade of six Pinoy chefs well-trained in Chinese resto cooking. Chef Ming's repertoire of authentic, highly flavored and interesting dishes is wide-ranging, with the restaurant maintaining that about 30% of its offerings are not found in any other Chinese restaurant in Cebu.

The dishes are specially cooked with special attention to form, color, and aroma appealing to the senses, true to the tradition of dishes reflective of the skills, culture and flair of Hong Kong-style cuisine. According to Jun Bondoc, club manager of Club Ultima, many ingredients are also sourced out of Hong Kong-dubbed by food critics worldwide as the "gourmet paradise." "Since we are very choosy with our ingredients especially in terms of freshness, we do the purchasing ourselves," Bondoc further stressed.

In addition, Chef Ming is attuned to the needs of customers, along with the amiable restaurant manager, Rosa Tan, (both after all grew up in families manning restaurants!), making a conscious effort to personally reach out and know the comments of the guests themselves.

At the moment, any fan of Chinese cuisine would be ecstatic to know that Wang Shan Lo is reasonably priced for food of such quality and in such environs.

The restaurant setting is not ostentatious and overpowering, but it cleverly makes use of lighting and oriental tones.

After its soft opening recently, Wang Shan Lo has been steadily drawing in a growing number of fans, with the restaurant fully-packed on Sundays.

Recently, Wang Shan Lo introduced its buffet wherein at only P350 net, you'll get to enjoy delectable dishes like Peking duck, canton noodles, stir-fried vegetables, tender meats and a selection of dimsum. Buffet is available from Monday to Saturday 11AM to 2:30 PM. The restaurant actually does its own dimsum and roasting. An outstanding entry on the menu is the Dragon balls, prawns served in fiery hot and at the same time sweet and sour sauce.

"In terms of quality, we are at par with the best, the only difference is that we try to offer all these at the cheapest rates," said Bondoc.

The waiters are a friendly hovering presence, awaiting your every request. The restaurant also has a 500-person seating capacity, ideal for big celebrations like weddings. Club Ultima members can enjoy the food with a 40% discount.

The restaurant is open from 11-3pm and 6-11pm. So far, a stream of positive reviews about Wang Shan Lo has reached our ears. But the people behind the restaurant suggest most especially to those who have never been to Wang Shan Lo to confirm and find that out for themselves.
