MANILA, Philippines - After the dust settled in the 2017 UAAP Cheerdance Competition, two things were clear for the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe.

They made a successful return to the podium, and that they still hold the record for the longest CDC reign.

National University Pep Squad's bid to tie UST's five straight crown came to a halt as Adamson University dethroned them Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena.

But for newly minted Salinggawi head coach Mark Chaiwalla, winning silver and keeping their record are all just bonuses.

"I wasn't expecting (to win). I have faith in my kids and my team. Pero ayun nga, it's everybody's ball game," he said.

Although there is pressure to deliver for one of the proudest squads in the league, Chiawalla said they stayed true to their battle cry: do it for the community.

"They absorbed everything, the pressure was there but it made them hungry and stronger and I'm proud of them," he added.

Chaiwalla, an alumnus of Salinggawi, took the head coaching job only in June and had to come up with a competitive routine in less than six months.

"I've been through the highest and lowest of Salinggawi. Last year ko yung seventh place ng Salinggawi so sabi ko sa mga bata, mag enjoy lang kayo regardless of the place, that's more than enough for you to be thankful na," he closed.
