MANILA, Philippines – Nakatakdang magtungo ngayong gabi ang anim na Filipino athletes na lalaban sa limang sports disciplines kasama ang kanilang mga coaches at ilang officials sa Rio de Janeiro para sumabak sa Summer Olympics sa Aug. 5-21.

Babanderahan ni Ian Lariba, ang itinalagang flag-bearer ng Philippine de­legation, ang mga athletes na bibiyahe ng 25 oras mula sa Manila papuntang Rio via Dubai.

Si Lariba ang kauna-unahang table tennis player mula sa Pilipinas na magla­laro sa Olympics.

“We all have the res­ponsibility to carry the fight for our country,” wika ni Lariba.

Makakasabay ni La­riba sa pang alas-11:30 ng gabi. Emirates flight sina weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz at Nestor Colonia, long jumper Marestella Torres, swimmer Jessie King Lacuna at taekwondo jin Kirstie Elaine Alora.

Sila ay sasamahan nina Filipino chef-de-mission Jose Romasanta at Col. Jeff Tamayo, ang second vice president ng Philippine Olympic Committee.

Ang anim pang athle­tes na kakatawan sa Rio Games ay sina boxers Rogen Ladon at Charly Suarez at track and field’s Eric Cray na magmumula sa United States, swimmer Jasmine Alkhaldi galing sa Hawaii, marathoner Mary Joy Tabal sa Japan at golfer Miguel Tabuena sa Manila.

Darating naman si Jose Cojuangco, ang POC president, sa Rio bago ang Aug. 5 opener.

“It’s not good to put pressure on them. But as long as they behave well as before, show a fighting heart and sportsmanship, and people will respect the Philippine delegation we should all be happy,” ani Cojuangco.
