LPA, Paolo leave P175-M damage to agri, infra
ZAMBOANGA CITY , Philippines — At least P175 million worth of agriculture products and infrastructure in this city have been damaged by heavy rains and floods spawned by a low-pressure area and Tropical Storm Paolo since last week, officials said yesterday.
Of the figure, officials said, the agriculture sector including the fishery industry accounted for the bulk of damage at P155.664 million.
Intermittent rains inundated at least 2,600 hectares of rice, corn and vegetable farms as well as fishponds and seaweed farms in 23 barangays, according to city agriculturist Diosdado Palacat.
At least 1,000 hectares of farmlands and 1,600 hectares of fishponds were destroyed, Palacat said.
Floodwaters subsided on Friday, after dealing a massive blow to agriculture and affecting 2,499 farmers.
The city disaster risk reduction and management office said nine persons have died in separate villages.
The city was placed under a state of calamity early last week.
