Barangay chairman, 3 others killed in Cotabato gun attack
COTABATO CITY, Philippines — Gunmen shot dead a barangay chairman here and three others in a daring attack Tuesday.
Police investigators said Chairman Max Pasawilan of Tamontaka 1 and his constituent-councilor, Unting Pasawilan, and barangay tanods Johnny and Anday, both surnamed Manisi, died from multiple gunshot wounds sustained in the attack.
All four of them were seated on benches outside of the house of Pasawilan when two vehicles carrying gunmen pulled over and opened fire.
Witnesses said the suspects, wearing black ski masks, fired their guns through the open windows of their vehicles and hurriedly escaped.
Responding policemen from a nearby police station gave chase but failed to arrest the suspects.
Relatives of the slain barangay chairman said an old grudge or rido (clan war) may have possibly led to the atrocity, the first ever violent incident in Cotabato City President Rodrigo declared a Mindanao-wide martial law after Abu Sayyaf and Maute gunmen laid siege in a dozen barangays in Marawi City on May 23.
