Catholics urged to support relief operations for Marawi City

MANILA, Philippines — The Catholic Church, through the National Secretariat for Social Action/Caritas Philippines, has launched an appeal to all 85 dioceses in the Philippines for help for those affected by clashes in Marawi City.
“The national Caritas is now appealing to your generosity for any assistance to augment the needs of the internally displaced persons affected by the Marawi siege,” Archbishop Rolando Tria Tirona, national director of NASSA/Caritas Philippines, said in a letter to church leaders.
He said NASSA/Caritas Philippines has already released an initial P300,000 for relief operations of the social action center of the Diocese of Iligan.
Other Mindanao dioceses have also started helping the Prelature of Marawi provide relief to displaced families, he said.
The church's social action arm has also sent a team to Mindanao to help assess the needs of those displaced with the fighting that began on May 23.
According to the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the clashes have affected 12,509 families, or around 59,665 people, from 26 barangays in the city. Around 4,278 people have been staying at 14 evacuation centers as of Monday morning.
The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, in a briefing Monday morning, said that more than 3,700 people have been reported still stranded in the city. Close to 1,500 have also been rescued.

NASSA/Caritas Philippines said there are still no updates on Fr. Teresito Suganob, vicar general of the Prelature of Marawi, and 15 others abducted from St. Mary's Cathedral in Marawi by the Maute group last Tuesday.
