Federalism gains support – Pimentel

MANILA, Philippines – Federalism is gaining support in the provinces, according to former Senate president Aquilino Pimentel Jr.

“I was in Baguio, I was in Cebu, I was in Bohol and many places and the reception is one of interest,” Pimentel said in an interview after a forum on federalism on ANC, ABS-CBN’s cable news channel, on Tuesday night.

Pimentel said at least 43 percent of Filipinos have also expressed interest in support ing a federal form of government, citing a recent survey. “It is a good start,” he said.

Pimentel allayed fears that federalism will promote political dynasties and “warlordism.”

“When it happens, the Armed Forces of the Philippines  and the Philippine National Police will come in to dismantle warlordism. It can be done,” he said.

Pimentel has been going around the country to promote federalism.
