Diarrhea outbreak declared in Samar

PALO, Leyte, Philippines – An outbreak of diarrhea has been declared in parts of Samar with over 800 cases reported, including 11 deaths.

Eight deaths were reported in Catbalogan City; Calbiga town, two, and Sta. Rita, three, Miniverna Molon of the Department of Health in Eastern Visayas told a press briefing on Monday.

Molon said the DOH distributed medicine to Catbalogan and Calbiga in coordination with non-government organizations Oxfam, Save the Children and Plan Philippines  

“We are looking into the prevention aspect and we are responding to the needs of the affected towns. This is not alarming. There is awareness… to report cases of diarrhea,” she said.

The surveillance and epidemiology unit of the DOH traced the outbreak to contaminated water.

The DOH recorded 1,573 cases with 32 deaths in all Samar provinces.

In Hilongos, Leyte, 316 cases and one death were reported while Tacloban had 38 cases.
