MANILA, Philippines — About eight in 10 Filipinos, or 77 percent, expect their Christmas to be happy this year, the highest recorded in 14 years, the Social Weather Stations (SWS) said in its latest survey.

Expectations of a happy Christmas were highest in Mindanao, a region placed under martial law, and among the extremely poor, based on the poll taken from Dec. 8 to 16.

The survey showed 77 percent of Filipino adults who expect a happy Christmas against only five percent who expect it to be sad.

The 77 percent expecting a happy Christmas is the highest in 14 years, matching the figure in 2003, the SWS noted.

Expectations of happy Christmas was 73 percent in 2016.

In 2017, expectations of happy Christmas was highest in Mindanao at 84 percent, followed by Visayas at 80 percent, balance Luzon at 75 percent, and Metro Manila at 69 percent.

SWS noted that in nine out of 16 surveys since 2002, expectations of happy Christmas have been higher in Mindanao than in other areas.

Compared to 2016, expectations of happy Christmas improved in Mindanao, Visayas and National Capital Region, but hardly changed in balance Luzon.

The percentages of those who expect a happy Christmas this year are higher among masa class D (78 percent) and very poor class E (75 percent) than among middle-to-upper classes ABC (71 percent).

Expectations of a happy Christmas are high across age groups.

It is particularly higher among the 18 to 44 year olds – 80 percent among the youth aged 18-24, 79 percent among the 25-34 year olds, and 81 percent among the 35-44 year olds.

It is 73 percent among the 45-54 year olds and 76 percent among those 55 years old and above.

Except in 2007, 2011 and 2012, the youth are usually happier at Christmas than older adults, the SWS said.

For 81 percent of Filipinos, it is “better to give” than to receive Christmas gifts.

This is the highest recorded since SWS started asking the question in 2006.

Those who said it was “better to give” was 75 percent in 2016.

The sense of giving was 75 percent in 2006.

The survey used face-to-face interviews of 1,200 adults nationwide.
