MANILA, Philippines - Several congressmen yesterday expressed outrage over the death of more than 60 drug suspects in the past two days, including a Grade 11 student in Caloocan City.

They threatened to scrap the proposed P900-million anti-drug war augmentation fund for the Philippine National Police (PNP) for next year, fearing it might be used to kill more drug suspects.

“The killings have become brazen. The police claimed that the young Caloocan student fired a gun at them, but this is not what the barangay CCTV (closed-circuit television) footage shows,” Rep. Gary Alejano of party-list group Magdalo said.

Alejano said policemen continue to take the law into their own hands in the name of President Duterte’s drug war.

“The President says that he loves Filipinos, he loves the country. Stop the hypocrisy, he is heartless,” Alejano said.

The former Marine captain urged policemen to defy any illegal order from Duterte, such as killing drug suspects.

“You serve and protect the Filipino people. That is your oath. You are not the private army of Duterte. He is not President for life. Please remember that you are not only killing the suspects, you are also killing our democracy in the process,” Alejano said.

He also called on the people “to denounce this inhumane policy of killing as much as we denounce illegal drugs and corruption in government.”
