MANILA, Philippines - A Filipino and his five-year-old child were among those injured in the terrorist attack in Barcelona, Spain, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed yesterday.

The DFA did not release the names of the victims, but said the Philippine honorary consul went to the hospital to check on their condition.

In a television interview, Philippine honorary consul general in Barcelona Jordi Puig Roches said the victims were injured when a van plowed through pedestrians in Las Ramblas district late Thursday afternoon.

Roches said the father suffered minor injuries while the child was seriously injured and needs surgery.

The father, son, mother and another child were visiting the popular tourist spot in Barcelona at the time of the incident. They are Irish citizens but hail from Cebu.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano expressed condolences to the Spanish government and condemned the terrorist attack in Barcelona that left 14 people dead and over a hundred injured.

“The Philippines condemns in the strongest terms this disturbing act of terror perpetrated by extremists against innocent men, women and children in Barcelona,” Cayetano said in a statement.  – With Christina Mendez, Paolo Romero
