DFA: Injured Filipinos in London fire received treatment
MANILA, Philippines — Filipinos injured in a blaze that ran through a 24-story apartment tower in London have received medical treatment, the Department of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday.
The Philippine embassy in London earlier confirmed that a number of Filipinos were among those who were hurt in the fire that engulfed Grenfell Tower.
“A number of them are in the emergency shelters at St. Clement’s Church, the St. Francis of Assisi Church and the Portobello Rugby Club on Walmer,” the embassy said in a statement.
The DFA said that the injured Filipinos were taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries.
"Filipinos living near the Tower have also been advised not to go back to their homes until the situation stabilizes," DFA spokesperson Robespierre Bolivar said.
Representatives of the embassy have visited the Filipinos injured in the fire, according to the DFA.
Terrified residents of the Grenfell Tower said there was little warning of the inferno that engulfed their high-rise apartment building and left 12 people dead — a toll that officials said would almost certainly rise.
The blaze early Wednesday in the apartment building in west London's North Kensington district also injured 74 others, 18 of them critically and left an unknown number missing. A tenants' group had complained for years about the risk of a fire. — Patricia Lourdes Viray with Associated Press
